Why swimming? I’ve been asked this question many times. Like a lot of kids, I played soccer, baseball, basketball, ran track, and I even played a little flag football. I enjoyed playing all these sports, but swimming was something that was fun and rewarding. I had finally found a sport that pushed me yet gave me a rush.
I have been swimming competitively since I was 8 years old. During my years of swimming I have grown to love the sport. My love for swimming has helped me maintain the drive and motivation necessary to achieve USA AAA Time Standards, Sectional Time Standards, GA State Time Standards, and set 5 new High School records. My love for this sport keeps me going and motivates me to not give up or give in to the frustration and disappointment of extended slumps, plateaus, losses and setbacks. An example of this was during my Age-Group swimming years. I was around 12 years old. My times were not improving. I went to practice every day. I stayed after practice to work on my technique. I felt prepared and ready for every meet but at every meet for a full year I didn’t drop any time, in fact, I went up in time in all my events. Around this time a lot of my good swimming friends were leaving the sport. This was a very difficult time for me, but I had a passion for swimming and was committed to my goals and knew if I stayed focused, continued to work hard, and didn’t give up I would achieve my goals and I did just that.
Swimming has helped me grow as a person and as an athlete. I’m a leader and a teammate. On my club and high school teams I’m that leader that inspires, motivates, encourages and supports my team as a whole and my teammates individually.
Swimming has taught me so many valuable lessons in and out of the pool. The dedication needed for swimming has carried over into my academics. I am in a Magnet Program at a S.T.E.M. school which is very rigorous. Academics is my top priority; it comes before swimming. I want to be part of a college program where I’m challenged academically as well as athletically. I am open to all options and want to ultimately find the right college match for me.
