At the age of 8, I jumped into my first competition pool and from that day forward I always enjoyed swimming. One thing that keeps me motivated is seeing my teammates succeed along with me. Another thing that kept me driven was my Papa. I formed a special bond with my Papa especially over swimming, as he commonly referred to me as his little fish. That within itself continued to push me forward and kept me driven.
Over the years I fell in love with the sport of swimming. For most people outside the sport, and me for awhile, it seems to be an individual sport. I quickly realized that it was much more than that. You spend early mornings, late nights, and a lot of weekends with your teammates. This helped me form lasting friendships that I will forever cherish. The high intensity that teammates bring to each practice helps drive you to be the best. This in turn makes us prepared for any meet knowing that we’re going to get in the pool and bring our best.
Swimming has taught me that with hard work and dedication you can make a dream a reality. This sport has prepared me to face difficult times with an optimistic mindset, and how to quickly recover from failure. Swimming has showed me that when I am committed and dedicated to accomplishing a goal I won’t stop until I’ve reached said goals. Swimming has shaped me to be a compassionate, hard-working teammate. When I was awarded team captain I was given the opportunity to develop my leadership skills, increase responsibility while still succeeding, and to show how trustworthy I can be.
Through my many years of competitive swimming I have grown the confidence that I can compete at the collegiate level. During these years I have also been able to succeed academically. I am seeking a program that will allow me to compete at a high level but will still provide me with great academic opportunity.
