For the past 11 years, change has been a pivotal part of my life. Starting to swim for fun & fitness to interest in competitive swimming, being a state champion as Junior and representing state in national swimming at India reflects a profound change. After relocating from India to the United states, I have learned to embrace and welcome change as opportunity and explore new horizons, both academically and athletically. This meant adjusting to a higher level of rigor and intensity in both studies and extracurricular activities.
During the pandemic, the only constant motivation that persisted was the pool. Since that first splash at age 4, I’ve known—I belong here. My journey has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs but I knew that swimming would remain an integral part of my life, and for that, I will forever be grateful to my parents and to all my wonderful coaches.
As a swimmer, I’ve learned that to succeed, you must maintain high goals and put all the marbles in the jar to achieve them. So, in high school, I set my sights on the sub-5 minute 500-yard freestyle, the elusive 55-second mark in the 100 backstroke, and a lightning-fast sub-22-second 50-yard freestyle. Ambitious goals are the key to my success and it will continue to be that way.
Versatility is one of my key traits. I am a swimmer who adapts - whether it is sprinting, endurance or anything needed for the teams' success. Adaptability coupled with “100% all the time” work ethic defines me. Using this mindset, not only for swimming but also academically, I pushed myself to achieve a high unweighted GPA of 3.95 and a weighted GPA of 4.54 along with 10 AP courses (to be 15 post-senior year).
Last year, my persistence and work ethic in and outside of the pool paid off—I earned the honor of Swim team captain.
Suddenly, I saw swimming through a different lens. It is not just individual races; it is about team cohesion, collective energy. As a leader, I lift others when they are low. And here’s my unique twist: I am the team’s “hype-man.” Energy flows through me, igniting the poolside atmosphere.
Overall, it is a compelling example of what swimming taught me in life - Embrace change, adapt, be ambitious, overcome hurdles, carry the team along through great leadership qualities.
