My parents put me in swim lessons when I was 5 because my dad didn’t know how to swim. I wouldn’t leave practice until the swim team arrived and couldn’t wait to be part of the team. I worked hard and was able to join the summer I turned 7. My first winter season with the team, I was voted “New Comer of the Year”. The next year, I earned a time drop award. During my club swimming years, I’ve went on to earn 3 more time drop awards, swim of the year (100 back), and 2 regional high-point trophies. I’ve even started coaching the younger swimmers on my club team. Little did I know that a few swimming lessons would turn into a love of the sport.
When I joined my High School Varistity swim team as a freshman, my goal was to qualify for the state meet. I helped my relay teams qualify at districts, however, I wasn’t able to swim with the team at state. I didn’t let that discourage me. I worked hard in the off-season and came back the next year stronger and more determined.
As a sophomore, my goal was to make it to the state meet. I was able to swim with both my relay teams, but narrowly missed out swimming as an individual. They took 32 swimmers – I finished 33rd. Again, I didn’t let it discourage me. I worked even harder in the off-season; determined to make it to the state meet as an individual.
As a junior, I finally made it. I swam personal best times in all my events at Districts. At the state meet, I was able to swim with both relay teams and as an individual in the 100 free and 200 IM. At the close of the season, I was awarded the “Dr. John Ferguson Award” and MVC First Team All Conference Honors. I was also named Co-Captain of next years Varsity team.
I have learned so much from the sport. Never give up, work hard, learn from others and from your mistakes, and have fun.
When I’m not in the pool, I coach, life guard and am counselor at Camp Tanager.
I’d like to continue my competative swimming career after high school. I’m looking for a school that will help me grow as a swimmer, team mate, and person. I’m a coachable, well-rounded swimmer and belive I have the talent, character and drive needed to make a difference on your team!
