My name is Conor Doogan and I am a competitive swimmer representing the Class of 2023. I have and continued to work hard towards achieving my goal of attending and swimming at the collegiate level. Though I have had success, I want more when it comes to learning, growth, and competitiveness on and off the pool deck. I have always been the kid that wants more. All that I do and have done, whether it be attending school, training for my club team, or volunteering as an ocean lifeguard, I do in an effort to better myself for the future.
When COVID-19 struck, YMCA swimming in New Jersey was put on hold. I joined a Google Classroom that was run by my Y coaches. They posted workouts every day. From mid-March to mid-May, I put my head down, worked my tail off, and ate well-balanced meals to gain strength and muscle, knowing that I had the opportunity to get an edge over my opponents. Swimming would return again and I could finally race again. Along with all of this quarantine hard work, I had to deal with the loss of my grandfather to COVID, my last grandparent, on March 28th, 2020. From Memorial Day to July 4th, I swam every day in my neighbor's pool with a resistance cord on a belt. From July 4th to Labor Day, I reunited with my Y teammates and coaches, and we focused on our eight-week training course to ease us back into it. Along with practice, I trained as an Ocean Lifeguard in Sea Bright, New Jersey. So, through this unfortunate event, I have continued to train and grow stronger both in a team atmosphere as well as on my own independent level. This virus was a hiccup for our country and the swimming community, but a chance for me to pursue my dream.
I love to swim.
It is apart of who I am.
I am excited for the next chapter.
