Personal Statement

My greatest passion is the sport of swimming.  My love for the sport roots from my first real season of competitive swimming. When I was 14 years old, I decided to quit the track team in late May of 2015, to solely pursue my swimming. I joined the High School Training group at Nitro Cedar Park some time later that same month. The group had only a few practices a week, so I really had to make the most of my opportunities to improve. With a lot of hard work and dedication, I was able to improve exponentially and eventually move into the Sectional Development Group. In the Sectional Development Group I would meet some of the most amazing people, and make long lasting friendships.

  • James McCurley is absolutely one of my most enthusiastic, determined and willing athletes that I work with. Clearly, his lanky frame has the potential to morph into a great swimmer's build as he continues to grow and gains strength. In this reference though, I would like to emphasize the potential for his technique to improve. I have coached James for almost a year. He is like a sponge during our technical coaching sessions; he is inquisitive not just about "how" but also "why", he took our sessions very seriously and learned new skills quickly. In the midst of all this, we had fun during our sessions! James seems to know not to take things too seriously; he could laugh at himself when struggling with a skill and took a season ending injury in stride. Across the span of my coaching career, I found that athletes who had balance in their lives, focused on their sport during training, could separate swimming from their academic life and engaged in a positive social lifestyle, were the ones who were often most successful. James is polite and respectful. He shows immense pride in being a contributing member, as a freshman, on his high school swim team. I expect he will make a tremendous teammate and an athlete that a coach can rely on in and out of the pool. With the right balance of technical coaching, challenging training and a positive team environment, I think James could be a diamond in the rough! I appreciate your time and consideration of my professional opinion of James McCurley. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
