In our family we have a saying, “If something is worth doing, do it well.” Throughout my high school academic career, I’ve focused on taking challenging classes and performing to the best of my ability. I enjoy the challenge; particularly in math, science, and engineering classes. The same can be said of how I approach sports. I played competitive club soccer for 4 years with FC Dallas. Developing new skills, pushing my body to new levels, working with my teammates to execute on the field - I loved it. When I was 10, I found a similar challenge with swimming. In fact, when it comes to swimming, one of the things I like the most is the work. If you want to succeed, you have to show up, every day, do the work, and do it well.
I’ve learned that success isn’t easy, and that sometimes you have to overcome tough obstacles: you have to persevere. I’m a proud Texan. However, when I was 13, our family relocated to Missouri for 2 years with my dad’s job. I wasn’t excited. I didn’t want to go. But moving taught me to adapt. I learned how to be comfortable with change, to build new relationships, and to make good things happen in new environments. These are skills that I know will benefit me during the transition from high school to college.
As I look ahead to college, I aspire to excel both academically and athletically. I want the opportunity to be a positive example for others through my actions in the classroom as well as in the pool. And for that, I’m willing to work hard, because if something is worth doing, you should do it well.
