The heart and core of my life as a student-athlete is my discipline. In order to perform at the best of my ability both on the court and in the classroom, I need to utilize all my resources and work to improve every day. As a scholar-athlete, I understand that my rigorous class schedule and the competitive nature of USTA tennis require my full effort. Due to my rigorous practice schedule of at least two hours each day, I understand that I have to make use of every spare moment so I can succeed in my classes, invest time in my practice, and take measures to improve my athletic abilities such as receiving proper nutrition and early sleep. I understand that becoming the player I aspire to be cannot just be activated on demand on the court or called upon by warm up. I have to embody this work ethic and focus throughout all aspects of life.
An early example of this occurred during my sophomore year as a varsity tennis player at Saint Francis High School. Due to my interest and passion for math, I challenged myself to take AP CALC AB in my sophomore year. I also had been a varsity player since my freshman year and worked every day to improve. During our WCAL (West Catholic Athletic League) semifinals, our team was playing one of the most distinguished high school teams in the country, Saint Ignatius High School. I was selected to play a highly ranked player and needed to perform at my best. I also had my AP test the day after the match and needed to prove my understanding of the course content. During the week leading to the match, I spent long hours after practice fine tuning my game and used every moment I could to prepare myself for the AP test. I performed well in both of those challenges and I realized the importance of being focused, managing time efficiently and working hard.
Although that is just one event, there are countless other examples of where I have used my discipline and intensity when working to ace tests and win USTA matches. This is the defining reason why I would want you to consider me for your team. I am obedient and put my best foot forward in whatever challenge life throws at me. I understand that there is no shortcut to success along my journey into college life and tennis, and know the sacrifices I have to make to fulfill my goals and aspirations. At the end of the day, I might not be the most skilled or most talented player, but my coach will always know that I will run to every ball, do my best in every drill, and be the best teammate and student I can. This is why I believe that I am a good candidate for your team.
