Sports have always been where my passion lies. I have competed in cross country, basketball, and soccer for most of my life, and am one of the top performing members in each of those sports for my school. During my first ever track season in sophomore year (Covid meant no season freshman year), it became obvious my natural talent was in long jump and triple jump. Track quickly became my favorite sport, and I continued to improve at every single meet. My long jump went from around 18’ then over 19’ and so on until I got my season PR of 21’6.75” in the state championship, earning me 3rd place. It was the same story in the triple jump. In my opening meet, I jumped 39’6, and continued to get better throughout the season, all the way up to my new PR of 43’3.25”, which earned me 5th place at the state championship.
I believe there is major room for improvement. My school is limited in what they can provide me. We don’t have a track, a field, a jumping pit, or a weight room. We use another school’s track, which means that I can only jump when there is official practice, which isn’t as much as I would like. The track coach is our AP history teacher, who is encouraging and positive but limited in coaching knowledge. I jump during practice but don’t receive feedback on technique or form. Typically, during a work-out the coach will go facilitate a workout for the runners, while I am off to the side jumping. Without a dedicated jumping coach, I have used other resources such as YouTube Videos and books about jumping as well as re-watching videos of my own jumps to figure out what I can improve.
Jumping with talent and enthusiasm has taken me far, and I love the sport, but I know that working on my technique and strength, as well as receiving better coaching, will allow me to greatly improve my distances.
