Hello, I am Matthew Welke, a runner that wants to enjoy his sport. I fell in love with XC in the fourth grade, going in and out of season until the Covid Pandemic hit. When I was in the middle parts of middle school (7th grade and first part of 8th grade) I committed my time to working on Eagle Scout. Soon after the first semester of the 8th grade, I signed up for track and fell in love with distance running overall. I ran decently for the first time in track and I truly fell in love with the sport. My goal is to be the best athlete I can be and I have big goals and I know there are going to be challenges along the way. As I run with Westlake in high school, I want to set a path where I can be the best teammate, companion, and runner I can be. Whatever college takes me, I want to contribute and provide a good part of the team. I have a mindset and a slogan I made to follow, "Love Run, Live Run, Perform Well.". This means to not give up and to continue trying in the sport, to make myself proud of the runner I am. Sometimes we have our best race of all time, and at other times we have bad races. Those are hurdles I myself have gone over and still will go over. As a runner, I want to commit and perform for the love of the sport. Classes like honors/ap mean a lot to me due to academics being my main priority. I currently attend Westlake High School as a Freshman, and I want to be the best runner I can be. My primary events are the 3200, 1600, 800, and 4 x 400 relay. Later in college running I look to run the 10000, 5000, 1500, and any relay beyond a 4x400. I can say, my efforts will not go to waste in my future of high school or my future college.
