Despite having two years left of the track at Simi Valley High School, I know I am not done running yet. I have been running since I was five years old. Being forced to quarantine through Spring and Summer 2020 has made me even more sure I belong on the track. I know that my next step is collegiate track. I love the team atmosphere, where we are all doing the thing we love most. The moment before the gun goes off is the ultimate adrenaline rush. The clearing of my mind into one singular goal: get to the finish line first. I no longer hear or see the crowd.
Even though we all work as a team throughout the week, the competition is really against us. In high school, we condition year-round, 5-6x a week. We focus on block conditioning. I love being pushed to always get a better time. As a freshman and sophomore, I was running with the seniors. Though I was petrified at first, I got even better by trying to keep up with the strongest and fastest on my team. I’m now running an 11.33 100m sprint.
As a teammate, I make sure to encourage everyone, even when they are in the competition. I’m also open to trying new things. I’ve participated in many field events. I have stepped in during a relay when we needed a fourth for the varsity team. In all years of running track, I’ve run in 40+ track meets. So, even without running through COVID, I have the necessary experience to be a competitive athlete. Through club track, I went to state for a 4x1 relay twice. I even tried distance running when I’ve always done short sprints. I consider myself adventurous on and off the field. I am up for anything new outdoors. I camp, hike, fish, and swim. Maybe my love for the outdoors is part of why I love track so much.
Most importantly, what sets me apart from other runners, is my character. I am open-minded and accepting of others. I am always the first to offer to help without complaint. I must be a good listener because everyone is always telling me I am easy to talk to. I’m quiet but I also have a good sense of humor. I can handle the hard training days and keep coming back. I am reliable and I really do like to be pushed to be my best. I always want the best for those around me, too.
As a student, I am still exploring. I’ve considered engineering, stock markets/trading, and architecture. However, since I am so good with people and kids, I’ve also thought about learning more about recreation or even working in the medical field. I am excited to get out of my town and see more of what the country has to offer. I know I would be an excellent fit for your team.
