When I was a kid, I never crawled. I went from lying on my back with nothing to do, to walking, and from walking to running. It was the one thing most visible about my character from those around me: I was ALWAYS running. It was the one thing I enjoyed most.
When I was finally given a chance to compete in seventh grade, I jumped at the chance. I had initially joined cross country because I believed I could be good at it. But then I discovered the team element to the sport, and how intrinsic it is to the heart of the sport. The time I spent with my teammates taught me humility. From that moment on, I strove to improve for the team. Victory became less a personal joy, and more a joy to share with those I ran with side by side.
Now as a captain, my appreciation for the team has only grown. Before I strove to be good for those on the team I looked up to. Now I strive to be good so my team can be good. I strive to improve so they can improve alongside me. Whenever I do well or win a race, I do it for the team. Maybe I do it so I can see that smile so closely linked to victory, like when my team won sectionals my sophomore year, and we had the honor of going to States. Maybe I can be the kind of person that I looked up to when I first joined. Now that I'm close to graduating, I only hope I have instilled the same passion in my team that made me so dedicated to running. I'll always treasure my time with them. But I would be remiss if I didn't say I was ready for a new challenge, a new opportunity to find a team I can love like the one I leave behind, and a team I can strive to excel for. Life these last few years hasn't always been easy, but I strive to learn from my hardships and carry on their lessons in the future. I hope in this next chapter of my life I can start working towards helping others beyond my team in a medical and health care setting.
