Academic growth: Academic progress shows tremendous growth over his high school
career. His GPA grew from a 3.3 in his first semester to a 4.0+ in his junior semesters, with
a career 3.61. The course difficulty also increased to AP level. Daniel has always had the
intelligence, curiosity, and brain power. He just had to figure out how to manage his
otherworldly athletic schedule with his academic talents.
Out Works Everyone: Daniel spends 15-20 hours a week doing track and martial arts. And
this is excluding weekend track meets or track meets during the spring. Very few high school
do two-a-days during the school year, but Daniel does. Daniel works out before school 3-
days a week from 5 AM- 6AM. Additionally, Daniel does track and martial arts after schools.
During winter track season Daniel has late nights practicing 3 days a week from 7-9 pm.
During the spring he attends track practice four days-a-week while maintaining his morning
schedule. He does martial arts 2 days a week year round.
Intensity/Passion: Shows up in his work ethic in track and in his academic work. He can
take great care in the little things as evidenced by achieving a 1 st and 2 nd degree Black Belt in
martial arts. Super passionate kid that really shows up for what he loves. Whether it is
getting the Black History Month bulletin board done, winning in track and martial arts, or
teaching his younger martial arts students…he devotes his heart and soul with intensity to
his passions.
High Energy Charisma: Daniel is the kid who is doing back flips at the school dance or
during the TGWBIS parade so the younger students will cheer. He is a master at capture the
flag in TGWBIS avoiding all the defenders and he is the organizer of tug war so his team
wins. He is running around the track yelling for his 4X400 teammates. In Spring Sing he is
center stage hamming it up. He is the bouncy tenor in the center of every choir concert.
Tough: LRA has been a challenging environment racially. Being subjected to racial slurs,
micro aggressions and stereotypical assumptions has been difficult. Daniel is a tough kid
and has worked hard to be thoughtful about
these interactions, but also to brush them off so
that he can accomplished his goals.
Daniel has participated in over 12 different sports, however currently his focus is on martial arts and track & field.
