Hello Coaches, my name is Lucas Babarcsik Szollosi, a member of the class of 2020. Upon thinking what personal statement would best paint a picture of who I am as a student-athlete, including a speech I gave to my teammates and friends proved to be best.
I have been running cross country since kindergarten, and have loved every moment of it. Starting out with quarter mile races, I found that out of all the sports I participated in, cross country was the hardest of them all. However, after running for over a decade, I can say that the sport creates an euphoria that no other sport can replicate.
As a cross country runner, my most proud moment happened between my freshman and sophomore year. It should be noted that before myself, Maumee Valley had never fielded a cross country team. In fact, when I went out, I was the only runner, using a track uniform my AD threw to me. But I ran.
It wasn't till I spoke to incoming freshman about the benefits of the sport that I was able to attract over 15 members onto the team. And in that sophomore year, Maumee Valley took 3rd in our conference.
My goal for this season is as much about me as it is my team. As a leader, I feel obligated to not focus solely on my progress, rather, the progress of the team. As captain, it is my duties to set an example for the rest of the team to follow, this is what I am working on this year. Part of this "example" is taking care of the tangibles; showing up first to all events and practices, not for the purpose of looking better, rather, as a friendly way of competition amongst the runners; having water; having the proper meal before and AFTER races and practices; cheering the slowest person on with the same energy as the fastest; using defeat.
My individual goal for the 2018 XC season: 16:20
Please feel free to contact me anytime! Additionally, I would like to share my instagram and youtube profile with you, if you would like to get a glimpse into my everyday life. On the youtube channel, I like to talk about motivation, my goals and ambitions, and me just having a good time.

---- From my pre season captain's speech
“Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.” - George S Patton
Hello everyone to this Cross County meeting, for those who do not know me, My name is Lucas Szollosi an upcoming junior. I have been running since the kindergarten, however, this speech is not about me. No, this speech, I hope, will be remembered throughout the summer and into the fall season.
When asked what are some team goals for the season, I thought, “what does the Maumee Valley Cross country team want to achieve?” I thought, “what kind of student athletes will be coming out, every day to practice, what are their attitudes like on and off the field.” This question made me think about myself, what kind of person am I….. I came to a conclusion.
After the exponential growth that the Maumee Valley Cross Country Team saw last season, I can say with the utmost confidence that we, as a team, will win TAAC championship….I believe that the MV XC team will qualify for states. I know, just look at the runners you have before you. Just to call a few people out, Quinn Dunlop. Quinn, I remember when you signed up, I didn't think that you would get this fit! You have a big year ahead of you for sure. Jeremy, ah Jeremy, I’d say that on the course Jeremy is the closest person I can see myself in. Jeremy and I just went to china and I was able to learn a lot about him, and he’s is a runner that is definitely going to have a breakout season. While in China, because of the restrictions on walking around, Jeremy and I decided to develop our own workout routine. Didi Chan! To tell everyone a story about Didi, I was in the hallway, and in all seriousness, Didi came up to me and flaunted his mile time, a blistering sub 6!!
However, to think that this team only has three outstanding runners is a great understatement. I believe that every single runner in this room has the ability to push themselves to victory.
Lang was a great captain last year, and I hope that this season I can add to his legacy.
As a team, let's all hold each other accountable. Lets, together, run our hearts out. Lets, together, inspire the person to our left and right to become the best runners they can be…. And then some.
For all those who are new to the XC program, welcome, you have made the decision, or are making the decision to join the toughest sport, ever created." June 4th 2018
