My journey, (academically and athletically), has had its ups and downs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, (2020 and 2021), schools in my hometown; Belle River, Ontario, Canada, were closed. Learning virtually, I struggled to remain focused and developed some poor habits. However, returning to school served as a reminder of how fortunate I was to be receiving the opportunity of an education. This motivated me to pursue academic excellence, something I view as very important for my future, and for my future family. My academic drive and determination were wavering, but I was able to overcome them. Athletically, I have experienced very similar predicaments.
While currently I am pursuing the sport of running, I have attempted to find success in a variety of other sports. My athletic career began in triathlon, and while initially, I was just out there to have fun, My parents quickly noticed my aspirations to improve and supported me all the way. I had always struggled the most at swimming, and I had asked my parents for support. What I received had a rather large impact on my future. My parents had gotten me private lessons with a former olympian to support me. I completely re-learned how to swim. My coach, after only a couple of months, recommended that I joined his swim team to further improve and practice on a more consistent basis. I swam with the Windsor Aquatic Club for 5 years, and during that time became a much better swimmer. However, I had only begun swimming to improve my triathlon skills and had never really fallen in love with it. So, after the Pandemic ended in late 2021, I decided to pursue a sport I had found love for running.
I’ve always run, but I seriously competed for the first time during the 2022 outdoor season and immediately fell in love. I ran my first race, a 3000m, at an open high-school meet. With zero training, I was still able to achieve a rather impressive time and felt a level of confidence I had not ever seen when on the swim team. I decided to join a track team and train throughout the summer to further improve. During the 2022 cross country season that October, I had remarkably qualified for the Ontario provincial championships as an individual and ran faster than I thought I was capable of.
In the future, I hope to achieve both academically and athletically and truly find a balance between the two. I would like to become either a mechanical or chemical engineer and would like to run the Boston marathon. Above being successful, I would like to pursue my joy of running and engineering unanimously.
