Personal Statement

I have always had a fascination with science and math. In middle school, I worked with a team to design and develop a science experiment that was submitted to Student Spaceflight Experiment Program (SSEP). SSEP partners with NASA to deploy experiments onto the international space station. My team and I submitted our experiment through the local, state and eventually national level for competition and won the honor of sending our experiment to the International space station. This experience cemented my desire to work in the engineering and sciences as a profession. This experience taught me how to present to large audiences, speak in front of influential project stake holders as well as articulate complex problems in simple and accurate terms. This project also took over a year to complete, which taught me more about perseverance and staying focused on both the short term and long term demand of projects and assignments.

During highschool, I was able to continue academics and take many AP classes in the math and science fields. While, many of my piers are also taking these classes, I have been able to maintain an above average GPA while working multiple jobs during the off-season athletic periods. I have had to balance the academics and the employment requirements from the time I was 16. During the athletic season for my track and field, I worked a part-time position, trained for the specific track and field events and managed my academics.

This work ethic transitions into the athletic events I participate in. I work diligently in my work-outs, follow-though with the assigned activities by my coaches. This had allowed me to see continued improvements in my decathlon scores, and increased heights in my pole vaulting. I continue to demonstrate to my coaches the hardworking necessary to make continued improvements.  A highlight of this hard work was placing 3rd in the Oregon State 5A pole vault competition in the spring of 2019 as a Junior. My personal record for the decathlon has improved more than 1400 points from my sophomore year to my junior year. My current PR is 4912. I know that my hard work will increase this score again this year and I'm looking forward to continued improvements.

What I'm most proud of as a member of both the local pole vault club and the high school track and field teams is the position of leadership I have been elected. I have been a team captain on the high school track team in my sophomore, junior and my senior year. I am also a captain on the pole vault club. In this role, I help lead the daily warm-ups, organize the team members for their event, and provide mentoring for younger team members. The role also requires that I put in the extra work setting up and breaking down the equipment. Showing up early and staying late to make sure the team has what it needs for both practice and for the meets.

My objectives for college is to find a program that will allow me to continue my athletic pursuits while balancing the demands of an engineering degree. I am passionate about the track and field events and look forward to college where I can see the results of my hard work.
