My name is Joshua Martin and some of my biggest strengths growing up have been my determination to succeed academically and athletically. Growing up, it has always just been my mom, brother, and I under one household. Without any male structure, I knew that I would have to step up and be the best role model for my younger brother that I could possibly be. Therefore in everything I do I always try to be the best I can be because I know that there are people counting on me to set the way for my younger sibling and eventually when I’m older the younger children that come along.
Academically I have always strived for greatness. My mom has always been my main support system when it comes to school. She was always strict on me about my grades and that is why I feel I excel in school because she never allowed me to slip off. Once my brother started school, I instantly realized that he was not as advanced in school as I was coming up. I always try to help him when I get the chance, but I feel my record of good grades in my lifetime motivates him to do good in school. Another reason I try to be so proactive academically is because I do not come from an extraordinarily rich family. I would not say we are the poorest, but to get to where we are in life now, we had to go through some struggle. I know that all my life I have heard “Josh’s grades are going to get him a scholarship one day”. I always wanted to live up to the potential that everyone has always held me to and now that I’m in my senior year I am aiming for my goals to get where I want to be in the next chapter of my life.
I have always stayed focused academically and that has contributed to my recognition athletically. I run track and I dedicate myself to that sport 110%. Any opportunity I get I am always trying to perfect my craft. Staying focused in school and being a well-known athlete go well together. I am a student athlete and although I get fame for running as well as I do, I never forget that first word in being a student athlete. I keep my grades up so recruits can see that before anything I am a student and I take my learning seriously. I would make my decision on schooling not only based on the sports program a school offers, but solely on if the school has the field I want to study. Therefore, academically and athletically they work together to get me to where I need to be to succeed.
Thank You,
Joshua Martin
