My love for track began when I was in the 6th grade. I remember hearing the announcement for track tryouts. I told my parents about the tryouts and since they both ran track, they believed and pushed me to tryout. The moment I stepped on the track and ran for the first time, I fell in love with the sport instantly. While in Middle School, my focus race was the 400m Dash. I nearly went undefeated and improved every race I ran. A pivotal point of my middle school career was when I lost my first race. I was very upset but I had beat my personal record by three seconds that race. I felt a new drive and determination. The next time I ran against the kid that beat me was most definitely my favorite track moment. I remember my dad telling me to draft my opponent to make him run faster and expel more energy and that is exactly what I did – until we got to the 300 mark, and then I put it all on the track. I swerved right around him and with everything I had I propelled myself across the finish line and I finally beat him!
Track and the fact that my family moved a lot because of my mom’s military career had a big impact on my character. Being a military kid comes with challenges but there are plenty of advantages as well. I have seen many parts of the world, which has given me a greater appreciation for diversity. I have learned to be very flexible in order to adapt to places, new schools, and new peers. I am also adept socially because of our frequent moves and my exposure to diverse cultures.
One of my high school track coaches, Mike Feldman, always told me my energy is infectious. I try to bring good energy to the team because if the team is all together and happy together, you will get the best out of everyone. My coach says I have excellent communication and leadership skills but most of all I can bring everyone together. The highlight of my high school career so far was being on the State winning 4x100 Relay Team my Junior year. I will never forget that feeling and my coach’s reaction! I also excel academically and I am looking for a program that will be a good fit for me academically as well as athletically. I believe I not only have the talent to compete for a college team, but the character, work-ethic, and leadership skills to make an immediate impact on your program. I know I have what it takes to be a leader on your team!
