My interest in volleyball began by watching people play. I was intrigued by the elements of teamwork, the ability to pound the ball onto the other side of the court, and leaving spectators in awe. I started playing volleyball in fifth grade. I was fortunate to have two coaches who were key influences. They taught me the fundamental skills and motivated me to play. My passion for the game has expanded my skills and experience to club and beach volleyball.
My personal high school academic goal is to maintain a GPA of 4.0 and above. My collegiate goals are to play for a competitive volleyball program, graduate with honors, and earn a Master's Degree or Ph.D. I am searching a college that offers an academic program that will fulfill my academic goals but also a volleyball program which will allow me to take my skill to the next level. Currently, I am undecided on a major but am considering a profession within the medical field such as Speech-Language Pathology or Dermatology.
The positions I have played are Setter, Opposite, and Libero. I have found the Setter can be stressful at times. I have to focus my attention on the things that I can control. There are many distractions during the game that can cause my focus to be broken (noise from the crowd, injury, bad referee calls, etc.). I had to learn not to question my performance. Instead of dwelling on a mistake, I quickly analyze the play and determine what I should have done better. On the court, I have learned to let go of mistakes quickly, manage stress, and to clearly communicate with teammates and coaches. I continue to challenge myself to overcome these obstacles and to improve my ability to perform as a setter.
I have learned the value of teamwork, sacrifice, responsibility, leadership, commitment, maintaining my composure, being receptive to criticism and feedback, and developing good communication from playing volleyball. I'm continuing to build upon my strength and discover my challenges. I understand the hard work, commitment, and sacrifice required to play at the college level.
