I have been playing sports since I was old enough to join my first soccer league. I have played soccer, baseball, basketball, and football. The part of sports I have always enjoyed the most was the teamwork. I loved the idea that to succeed on the field or on the court we had to know our jobs and do them. In the 7th grade one of my teachers asked if I would try out for the new volleyball team he was starting at the school. I tried out and made the varsity team. Our record that year was bad, but I found my sport. After the season, my teacher asked me to try out at the club where he coached. I made it on a team there. I have been improving my skills through playing club and school volleyball ever since.
Once I started to play volleyball, I realized that in every other sport I had played, one person could do it all alone. In volleyball, though, so many things have to go right and so many people have to work together for any play to work. When it comes to winning a set or a match, one person simply cannot do it alone. It takes a team. Since that first season in 7th grade I have been privileged to play on a number of successful teams and for a number of great coaches. On those teams, I have mainly focused on developing my skills as a middle. However, I have learned that we have the greatest success when everyone does what is best for the team. So, I have also worked as a setter and as an opposite when the coaches have asked me. This commitment to the good of the team is what I love about this sport and what I want to be a part of in college.
I am looking for a college that will allow me to explore my academic and career interests. I have always been interested in a variety of subjects (e.g. history, biology, health care, and business) and enjoy the opportunity to use my mind creatively to solve problems. I want to attend college at a place where I can pursue my academic interests and find a career path that best suits me. I want to find a career in which I am able to work with others to help improve people’s quality of life. Right now, majoring in a field like sports management and pursuing a sports related career (such as coaching or athletics department leadership) is the most appealing to me. I very much like the idea of promoting activities that enhance health and well being of the participants. I would also value having a career that involved teaching others about the values of teamwork, creativity, and dedication.
