Aloha, I’m Presley Longfellow. I was 14 when I first started and learned to play volleyball in my 9th grade JV team. After the season was over, I tried out for club team, and the coach moved me up to 16 age group. In my sophomore year, coach asked if I wanted to be on the varsity team, even though it meant not much playing time. By the time the season started, I had earned a starting position. As club season began right after I turned 16, I had a similar conversation with the coach. He wanted to move me up to 18 age group, but implied I wouldn’t get much playing time. By the time tournaments started, I had again earned my starting position. In the span of 2.5 years, I have surpassed expectations from my coaches by working hard and dedicating myself. In July, I made the All-Tournament Team at USAV Nationals. This club season, I have been recruited to play for Outrigger VC 18-1 coached by Charlie Wade.
Since I’ve been the tallest player among all my teammates, the coach initially placed me as a middle blocker. My hitting has improved to the point that, during this school season, the coach changed the offense to incorporate a lot of middle attacks and I did hit both outside and opposite during the year. I ended the year with kills that approach the outside hitter numbers and the best kill percentage on the team. I have demonstrated I am coachable and learn quickly and will continue to do so as I hone my skills as an outside and opposite hitter.
