I am Josh Valentine, and my journey into the world of volleyball has been nothing short of a transformative odyssey. Four years ago, I was a dedicated swimmer until a chance encounter at a playoff game for Desoto High School's volleyball team changed everything. Witnessing the skill and passion of those players ignited a fire within me, and from that moment on, my heart belonged to volleyball.
I immersed myself in the sport, devouring YouTube videos of collegiate teams, studying techniques, and practicing against a wall. I convinced my family to join me in games and serve drills in our backyard. It wasn't long before I felt ready to join a team, starting at the YMCA in a co-ed league. Though enjoyable, it was just the beginning.
The real breakthrough came when I found Panther City in Fort Worth, TX. Joining their club team marked a significant step forward, even if it was at a lower level. The experience was invaluable, and I enjoyed every moment on the court. Eager for more challenges, I set my sights on Excel Volleyball Club in Carrollton, TX. At13 years old, I made the 14-2 team, a feat that filled me with pride. Competing in larger tournaments expanded my horizons, pushing me to elevate my game. Concurrently, I ventured into track at Colleyville Middle School, complementing my volleyball journey and securing victories in the 100m, 200m, and 4x2 races. Then, the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, disrupting volleyball and messing up my chance to represent the US on the high-performance team. Undeterred, I made a promise to myself: I would use this setback as fuel to intensify my efforts. The following year, I secured a spot on the 14-1 team as a right-side hitter, an accomplishment that reflected my dedication and growth. The pinnacle of that year was an extraordinary winning streak of 50 straight sets, clinching first place in AAU Nationals and an impressive third at USAV Nationals. Despite the team's split due to conflicts, I refused to be thrown off course. Playing up on the 16-1 team at Excel Volleyball Club, I embraced the challenge and thrived in the right-side position, showcasing my versatility on the front row Simultaneously, I embarked on my high school journey, joining the track team at Colleyville Heritage High School. In a short time, I not only qualified for the area finals but secured a commendable third place in the 100m, a testament to my relentless pursuit of excellence. Reflecting on this journey, I realize that my growth as an athlete parallels my personal development. I now view challenges with a different perspective, driven by an insatiable competitive spirit. No obstacle, whether on the volleyball court or in life, will impede my progress. I am committed to becoming better each day, unwavering in my pursuit of greatness.
