I love engineering and water polo. I began both in Jr. High School, engineering in a stem program, water polo as part of the high school recruiting program. I have always liked things of a mechanical nature but the stem program is where my true interest was sparked. During my first two years of high school I took engineering as my elective and since then my teacher, Mr. Medore, has told me I am one of his star students and would be happy to write me a letter of recommendation in the future. In water polo, as a freshman I skipped the freshman team and was the starting goalie on the JV team. During my sophomore year I was the starting goalie for the varsity team, the only sophomore on the varsity team.
My goal is to go to college to get my degree in mechanical engineering. I would very much like to work in this field in the future. Right now I aspire to so use my degree to get into the coast guard and enlist as an officer. The coast guard requires a team to work together to provide the protection of our country's coast. Just like you need a good team and teamwork in water polo. I am a good team player and enjoy being a part of a good team. When I joined the water polo team my freshman year there were 14 other kids who joined too. Only 5 kids stayed on the team including myself. The reason I have persevered is that I never give up even if the odds are stacked against me. Most of the kids that did not make the team got cut or gave up but I stood my ground and pushed myself until I broke then I pushed myself even more. I believe in hard work and that if you work hard enough you will be rewarded. I also believe in the team concept, I know that the only way to be great is to work together as a team.
Being a goalie alone makes me different than most players. First, I play the entire game, and I still have to know all the positions in the pool and what everyone is responsible for. In addition, I understand the weight and the responsibility placed on my shoulders because I am a goalie. If I make a mistake the other team scores and I let my team down. Also, it would be difficult for another member of my team to fill in my position. So, my grades are equally important to me, and for my ability to stay eligible and continue to play. It is important to me not just to do well enough to play but to do well enough to hopefully get an academic scholarship in addition to a scholarship to play the best and toughest sport EVER!
I appreciate your consideration.
