My name is Silvestre Chavez, I'm 18 years old and I play for Downey High School. I've been playing water polo since I was 8 years old at South Gate Swim Stadium. At a very young age I played with adults because I knew that was going to make me better. Although I was the smallest one playing I knew the challenge that came with playing with adults. I've played against adults since I was ten and this has helped me a long the way to improve my water polo game. I want to use water polo as a way to get into college. Currently I play for Trojan Water Polo Club. I enjoy water polo because it is therapy for me. When I was 5 they broke into my house and I almost witnessed my mother pass away. Since my father doesn't live with me, bills and rent are often difficult to pay but we still manage to pay everything. Currently, I'm selling chocolates with my mother because this is what pays for swimming and water polo fees since my mother can't get a job due to taking care of me and because the attack left permanent physical damage to her. I do this every weekend from 6pm to 11pm. I am interested in going to a good school but I'm economically unstable and I would like to make it far so my mother and I don't have to do this and so we can have the things we need to succeed.
