My name is Lars Schubert and I play for West Valley Water Polo in Mountain View, California. I am a Junior at Los Gatos High School where I play varsity water polo and swim on the varsity swim team. I am looking to go to college where I can apply myself in the major of my choice and contribute to the water polo team’s success.
My water polo journey began at ten years old when a swim team friend asked me to try water polo at West Valley. From there I played on the DACA club team where we placed 4th in the 12u Gold division at JOs. More recently, I have been playing with San Jose Water Polo Foundation (where most DACA players went after the DACA program folded) for over two years where we competed in the 14u Platinum division at JOs. From there I entered high school where I played varsity my Freshman and Sophomore years and earned first team all league. Covid gave me the opportunity to begin again with the West Valley 16u team which is where I am currently playing. This last year, I played with the west valley 18u team and competed in JOs with them. Along my water polo journey, I had the opportunity to represent Pacific Zone in the ODP tournament for three years.
I am extremely interested in playing collegiate water polo and will continue to work hard to do so. While not always being the biggest player in the pool, I work harder than a lot of others so that I can play at the same level as the best athletes I compete with or against. I am an attacker on both sides of the pool and always play physically and aggressively. This work ethic is an important part of my life because it helps me thrive as a student first, athlete second environment.
I have always put in a great amount of effort into school, and water polo offers the perfect balance between school and sports. Through Sophomore year, I achieved a 4.0 unweighted GPA (4.17 weighted). Junior Year, I completed the year with a 4.75 weighted GPA or a 3.9 unweighted GPA. Senior Year, I am planning on challenging myself with 4 AP courses throughout the year. While school is always the most important aspect to me, the competitive nature of water polo helps me thrive in a school environment, and my ultimate goal is to attend a university that challenges me both academically and athletically through water polo.
