Personal Statement

I only started water polo in the post-COVID 2021 spring season my sophomore year, but I fell in love with it and started sprinting to be the best.  I joined two clubs that summer to play 4 hours / day and work with the best goalie coaches in NorCal, I was team MVP in Fall 2021, and then in Jan. 2022 I moved from NorCal to SoCal to spend the off-season with Rico and Tony Azevedo, Merrill Moses, and Amanda Longan at 6-8 Academy for 2 hours every morning and play for USC assistant coach Ivan Buich at night on Orange County Water Polo club's 18U team.  At 2022 JOs, I won the team's 2 shootouts with 2 blocks each, and the first one got us into the Platinum division.  For senior year, I transferred to national #8-ranked Orange Lutheran, where I am the starting goalie.  We won the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Championship, and I was selected 1st team All CIF-Southern Section Division 1 by the Southern California Water Polo Coaches Association.  I averaged 10 saves per game in the 20 games I played after my 30-day transfer sit-out.  Our record was 15 wins vs. 5 losses for those 20 games, compared to our  5 wins vs. 6 losses record during my transfer sit-out.  I aim to keep improving fast through 4 years of college while studying history, government, and statistics.

Won the shootout that got us into the Platinum Divison by blocking 2 shots out of 5, and won our team's other shootout by also blocking 2 shots out of 5. Here's a 1-minute video of the 10 shots in those 2 shootouts: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1j_v6YVlWOt9ADDj1FMZ4uyHrppnQ4v2S/view?usp=sharing

Blocked 3 of the 5 penalty shots against me, including this penalty shot by Tico Carsalade, who is committed to play at UCLA next year: https://photos.app.goo.gl/PhbRBAcZVzrLme2a6
  • Camp/Event
  • Azevedo Water Polo Spring Break Trip to Italy

  • I trained 5 mornings with Tony Azevedo and Italian silver medalist goalie Umberto Panerai, and I played in 5 afternoon scrimmages vs. local teams, splitting one half each with my team's other goalie. It was a blast to compete against the Recco 18U team in the Pro Recco pool and to hang out a little in Recco with Ben Hallock and Dylan Woodhead. One other highlight is that I blocked all 4 penalty shots against me during the week's games, including the one in this 7-second video from the Recco game: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OwbSCIPI7zm_RmbX2iqqgte1LbppB3rA/view?usp=sharing

Won the 6-8 Challenge for male goalies on Friday, then had the highest +/- Impact Score from the 3 regular team games so was selected for the Gold Medal Game of the weekend's most impactful players. Save percentage > 60% in every game except for the Gold Medal Game. Most impactful player overall in game 2, with game impact rating of +6 for 13 blocks vs. 8 goals allowed. • 2/14/22 to 2/14/22
  • Ranked 1st overall of the 6 goalies at the 6-8 Elite Academy, from testing for water polo-specific Position, Mobility, Stability, Breath, and In-Water Movement.

Training

  • 6-8 Elite Training Academy
  • 1 year
  • Less than one year after starting to play goalie, offered 1 of 3 goalie spots at Tony Azevedo's and Maggie Steffens' 6-8 Elite Training Academy for the 2nd semester, so moved from NorCal to SoCal on January 2, 2022. Trained 5 days / week from 10am to noon with Tony & Ricardo Azevedo, and with goalie coaching 4 days / week from Cutino Award Winner and current Olympic team alternate goalie Amanda Longan and 1 day / week from Olympic Silver Medalist goalie and current Pepperdine coach Merrill Moses. Also playing on Orange County Water Polo Club on nights and weekends.
  • South Penisula Water Polo Club & Jack Bowen Goalie Combines
  • 1 year
  • A few months after I started playing, Jack let me into SoPen for the summer even though it was already full, saying he saw something. Then I did all of his goalie combines that I could throughout 2021 before moving to SoCal for Tony Azevedo's 6-8 Academy in January 2022. Jack is a great goalie coach, and I hope to keep learning from him.
