My name is Mackenzie Moore and I live in Anchorage, Alaska. I recently started my senior year of high school at South Anchorage High School. Over the last two years, I have been the starting catcher on the varsity softball team. My freshman year, we took second place in the regional tournament, placed third in the ASAA state tournament, and won the ASAA state tournament Academic award, finishing the regular season with a 19-3 record. I was also awarded Most Valuable Player for the semifinal game at state, and Rookie of the Year for my team that season. My sophomore year, my team took first at the regional tournament and third at the ASAA state tournament. I received the Coach's Award for the 2019 season. Unfortunately, my high school season was cancelled my junior year due to COVID -19. However, my competitive softball team - AK Krush - took first at the USA State Tournament this year.
My love for softball began at the age of 4 when I first played T-ball in the Cal Ripken Baseball League in Arizona. I was hooked and have been playing softball ever since, making Little League All Stars annually since I was 9 years old. When I was 10 years old, I started playing competitive softball on a traveling softball team, and have been with AK Krush since 2016 (I moved to AK Aug. 2015). Since I've joined AK Krush, we have won the state tournament every year. I love to be challenged, so I picked up catching when I was 9 years old, although I was known for my golden glove at 3rd base. These days my prefered position is catcher, but I consider myself to be a utility player. Since moving to AK, I was fortunate enough to play on a Little League All Star team that won state and went to Western Regionals in 2016 and in 2018, with my All Star team taking third place at Western Regionals in 2018. Although softball has always been my main sport, I also participated in dance and soccer for many years, giving up both in 2015 to devote more time to softball. However, I have recently picked up playing flag football to improve aspects of my softball game, such as agility and speed.
While playing softball is a passion of mine, I also have other interests. In high school, I have taken numerous AP classes and I currently have a 4.22 GPA. I am interested in science, technology, engineering, and math, as well as history. Just two months after moving to AK, I won an AK history competition in middle school. I also take German and hope to gain a Seal of Biliteracy within the next year. In addition, I have played the viola since I was in 5th grade, and I am currently in the top performing group at my high school. I chose to play the viola because it is difficult to play and it is an uncommon instrument among orchestras. Another hobby of mine is traveling. Within 2 months of turning 12 years old, I spent 3 weeks in Europe as a student ambassador with People to People. I studied the culture, politics and history of Italy, Austria, France and Switzerland, and spent several days with a host family in Austria. As an 8th grader, I spent my spring break in the Galapagos Islands studying ecology, invasive species and environmental restoration through Ecology Project International. Finally, during my freshman year, I visited Italy, Switzerland, France, Monaco and Spain through Education First Tours. I love to experience different cultures and to venture out on my own. I strive for excellence in everything I do and love to learn about the physics and science involved with playing my sport. I would describe myself as passionate, hard-working, an avid reader and loyal friend. Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement and I hope to hear from you soon.
