Hello Coach! My name is Adriana Wiggins. I am a 5’6’’ outfielder from Long Beach, California. I am driven to play softball at the collegiate level. Softball is my passion, my outlet, and the biggest influence in my life. Softball has taught me the importance of trusting myself and the process, hard work, adaptability, effort, and attitude. My love for the game has grown as I have gotten older. Softball has given me a purpose and a direction. I relearn everyday that softball is a game of failure. That has pushed me to be persistent, and to always be ready to take on and learn from challenges. I love playing a team sport because I have the responsibility of holding myself accountable for my team.
I am looking for a school that is academically competitive, has resources and a strong support system built for student athletes, and that has a school/team culture of family. I would love to play for a school where I can utilize my skills on the field early in my college career. I am interested in exploring several majors such as sociology, athletic training, journalism, statistics, political science, or digital media. Although I haven’t found my career path, I know I want to incorporate softball or sports into my career choice. I am very passionate about sports, and I want to give back to my community. The MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, CA has inspired me to give kids opportunities to develop in their sport, like it has done for me.
Good grades are very important to me because they reflect my value of hard work and holding myself accountable. My goal is to graduate high school as a valedictorian and I am within reach with a 4.0 GPA. To further challenge myself academically, I enrolled in two community college courses online during the Summer 2020. I have been on the Highest Honor Roll since 2018, my freshman year, and have received an award as an outstanding student in the video arts program at my school. For my first Advanced Placement (AP) exam, I received a top score of 5 for AP World History. Additionally, I am the vice president of my school’s Young Black Scholars Club, am in the California Scholarship Federation, and in my school’s highest level of band, symphonic winds. Recently, I was selected to be a member of my school district’s Student Equity Leadership Team, and my purpose is to lend my student voice as we begin to recover collectively from the pandemic and improve educational equity in our district.
