My name is Kassidy Harper, and I am excited to be entering my Freshman year at Southwestern College, in San Diego CA. My athletic career started at a very young age (age 5). From this young age I had the opportunity to play soccer at a very high level and was selected to play on one of the top teams in San Diego, California. I was incredibly proud of my achievements in soccer, but I felt ready to try something new; softball! I had begged my mom for years to let me play softball and after much persistent asking, and maybe not so much patience, my mom finally said I could try.
Since then I have been on the field non stop! My first competitive season of softball began Feb. 2016, and within one year of playing I was selected for Gold All Stars in 2017 and then again in 2018. Our 2018 team was very skilled and we made it all the way to Nationals in Salem, Oregon. After the amazing experience of playing in nationals, I wanted to elevate my game even further and decided to try out for a Firecrackers team and was selected to play on the team.
Additionally, I have had success in my high school softball career and was honored to be selected to my JV softball team in 2019 at Santana High School in Santee, CA. As a freshman on JV I had the amazing opportunity to learn from a very experienced Senior catcher (who happened to be my oldest cousin).
In my first JV season I had lots of success. I had a batting average of .547 with 4 home runs, 1 triple, 2 doubles, and 21 singles. I had 25 RBI's and 21 runs. At the end of my JV season I made the difficult decision to try out for a new travel team, the Powersurge, managed and coached by Jay Strangberg and I am happy to say that I made the team and have been with them ever since.
Then 2020 came around. I was excited to play my sophomore season, but unfortunately COVID really messed up that plan. For the second year in a row I was honored to be the starting catcher for my high school's JV team, and I again had the great opportunity to learn from another senior catcher. I was looking forward to learning all I could from her, but that was simply not to be. I sincerely wish that we could have played more high school games in 2020, and that I would have been able to develop and progress my game and skill level. But, as I'm sure you are well aware, 2020 made that extremely difficult for many people, especially in the state of California.
That being said, now that surrounding states have opened, our teams have played as many games as we possibly could, even traveling further than we ever had to previously. Now with 2021 it appears that in my home state of California COVID seems to be FINALLY slowing down and we were fortunate enough to get a High school season! I am happy to say that I was selected to be my high school's starting Varsity Catcher as a Junior for the 2021 season. My stats from the season were a .391 batting average, 27 H, and 15 RBI. I was also honored to be selected to 1st team All League, 2nd team All east County, and as a Scholar Athlete.
My senior year came and went by so fast! My batting average was .333 and my on base % was .500. I hit 8 home runs, 2 in one game. I now hold the record at Santana for 2nd place most home runs in a season and tied for 1st hitting 2 home runs in a game. I was All league First Team, All East County, and voted MVP. What a year! My favorite part was hitting a home run at Senior night with all my friends and family there.
Now I am a freshman in college playing at Southwestern College. Go Jaguars! We are a few months into our season and I have hit 3 home runs, Batting avg .286, OBP .384, and SLG .492. I love catching and playing short stop for my team!
I just have to say that I love softball! It has become such a huge part of my life that sometimes I think it is my life. I am so looking forward to a fun travel season this summer and to growing more as an athlete and as a person.
