My name is Mattigan Aga, 2021 RHP playing for Colorado Invasion 02 18A. I have been playing since first grade and love the game of softball.
My love for the game was not instant. During my first several years, I played in the Jefferson County Recreation League. We were so bad, my coach would elect to be visitors when we won the coin toss so we would get to bat at least twice. I really hated losing so much I wanted to quit. It wasn’t until 6th grade, things changed for me. I decided to take a year off and start pitching lessons so I could tryout for a competitive team. After two lessons, my pitching coach thought I should start trying out for teams now. I went to several tryouts and I was told I wasn’t good enough. I finally found a home with the Colorado Invasion. The losing and being told I wasn’t good enough became my motivation to succeed. I decided I would put in the extra time and effort and outwork my competition. A typical week includes: pitching lessons, 3 pitching assignments, strength and conditioning training, team practices, batting lessons, games and of course homework. In 5 years, I have increased my fastball speed from high 30s to 60 plus mph, I have learned multiple pitches, have thrown several no hitters, have beaten the teams that rejected me, was selected as a USSSA Junior Elite All-American and was the captain of our Green Mountain High School varsity squad and was named 1st Team All Conference in Jeffco 4A league as a freshman. I have now been honored with two more 1st Team All Conference awards (Sophomore, Junior) and All State Honorable mention (Sophomore). I also currently have a 4.6 GPA and have a class rank of #1 in my class and have received multiple academic awards in high school.
The road hasn’t been easy but it has been worth it. I have been able to strike out the last batter to win a championship after throwing almost 200 pitches on a Sunday but I’ve also given up the game winning hit or walk to lose a big game. No matter what, I find my peace on the mound. I want the ball when everyone else is scared or nervous, I always want the opportunity to compete and get better.
Finally, softball has taught me lessons in perseverance and the value of a strong work ethic. I have been able to apply those lessons to school work and have a strong desire to go to college to get a great education and to continue competing with the best of the best. For college, I really enjoy computer science. Finding a college where I can continue my education in those areas and also play softball would be an incredible opportunity.
