I was first introduced to softball at the age of 7. I began pitching when I was 10. At the plate, I am one of the most productive players on the team. I have five pitches I am very confident about: my fastball, changeup, curve ball, drop curve and rise ball. I continue to work on my screwball. I can play any role on the field, and it is hard for me to sit the bench, but pitching is my passion. When I am not pitching I enjoy playing first base because of the action. My coach told me “I am integral to the team’s success because I am a natural leader and the team cheerleader and motivator.” Additionally, several parents have said that I am a great role model for many of the younger players.
I believe that sports give people purpose and teach teamwork, a healthy lifestyle and commitment. I generally choose team sports. In addition to softball, I have been a practice player for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball team and played on the Central Jersey Volleyball Academy 13U black national team. This year I played on my school JV basketball and JV volleyball teams, but softball is my heart and soul.
My parents have helped me balance my sports and academics and have provided a good home atmosphere to help me succeed. In high school my goal is to maintain a 3.5 GPA while completing my biomedical academy program. My first marking period I achieved honor roll with a 3.55 (https://www.dvrhs.org/Page/6233). When I think about college, I am looking into a medical career because I want to help people.
When I am not on the field or doing homework, there are an abundance of activities that keep me busy. I am a Senior in Girl Scouts and have earned my bronze award. I was nominated to attend Ambassador Leadership Summit in 2018 at Harvard University, and in 2019 at Johns Hopkins University. The summit helps young adults develop leadership skills and prepare for the opportunities and responsibilities they will face in the years to come. I enjoy singing. I sang the national anthem at a Harlem Wizards game in 2018; and I performed the lead in the school play in 2019. I teach religion at the local church to help children who may not have the family support that I have. Through these experiences, I have learned that I perform at my best in high pressure situations whether on the field, on the court or on the stage.
