“You will never reach higher ground if you are always pushing others down.” –Jeffrey Benjamin
The quote above means a lot to me. You see, I was bullied in middle school. Nearly every day, the group of students who bullied me made sure they sent me home feeling ugly, stupid and worthless. My self-esteem and my self-confidence suffered. I felt defeated and like I was never going to be anything in life. Then, I watched my mom fight cancer. I saw her bravery and her toughness and it inspired me. She taught me that while there are difficult times in life, you have to push through and believe in yourself despite your challenges. That is what she did and that is what I learned to do.
So why should you be interested me? What makes me different than the many other talented students you are looking at? Work ethic. With all that I have been through both at school and at home, I do not give up. I work hard no matter what. Even when I make mistakes, I take those mistakes and I turn them into lessons learned. I have the same attitude toward my academic life as I do with my athletic life: work hard, practice harder. Everything I do, I do to the best of my ability and I have a willingness to learn. My hitting coach tells me that what sets me apart from the rest is that I am coachable. I understand that I do not know everything and that is okay. I love to learn and that is what makes me special.
When I graduate high school I hope to have the opportunity to attend a Division I college. I would like to study law and if granted the opportunity, I want to attend a school that not only leads in academics and athletics but is also a leader in community service and giving back to underserved populations. My plan is to become an advocate for those less fortunate. Having a background in law will help me to do that in the most effective way possible. Through my athletics, I will obtain the skills needed to become a coach for underprivileged kids. I would like to give kids the opportunity to develop their talents, build their self-esteem and self-confidence. These are all things that the people who love me helped me with when I was being bullied and I cannot wait for the chance to be a mentor for others.
Life is not about taking what you can get. It is about capitalizing on opportunities and working hard for your success. Then, once you get to where you want to be you turn around and you help others get to where you are. Everyone should have an equal opportunity to succeed and I want to be a part of an institution that will help me level the playing field for those who would not otherwise have a fair chance.
I hope you will consider me a good fit for your institution. I won’t promise you perfection. But I will promise you hard work, dedication, a willingness to learn and a desire to give back.
