Making the district team, for my high school, as a freshman was one of the most rewarding moments for me since I began playing softball 11 years ago. Little did I know, my coach had been pushing me towards that point since I made her middle school team in sixth grade. All throughout my freshman year she told me, “Leigha, I get onto you because I expect better of you.” What I know now is that fueled me to show her I was just as good as anyone else out there, and on the season opener of my freshman year, I started on a team with 18 players.
One of the things playing softball had taught me to love is coaching the game. When I first starting catching at around the age of 12 my dad said, “You should know the game so well, you can call your own pitches.” That mentality taught me to watch the game not only as another player, but a coach as well. The first year my younger sister and I no longer played on the same team because of our 3 year age gap, I attended all of her practices and games that I could trying to reach the goal of assistant coach, and the fall of my sophomore year, I reached that goal.
Before I even tried my hand at coaching, I have always like the idea of teaching. During summer break I would make my younger siblings sit down, print them worksheets offline and we would play school. So naturally my love for coaching makes total since. I like helping people, and not just helping, but also teaching them new things, or how to do certain things better. I want to attend a school that will plant that seed deeper than it already is in me.
