I was raised on a softball field. Before I knew how to play softball, I knew how to drag a softball field. Today, I can help maintain a field, but my expertise is tracking the ball and skilled base running. My Dad had me shagging balls with his high school team at age 6. Not only do I love playing the game, I respect the game. It’s in my blood.
My freshman year, I moved to a 6A school in Austin, TX, where the school looks more like a college campus with 900 students in my class. Given the talent and competitiveness of Lake Travis High School programs, I was happy to make the JV softball team. By district play, my coach brought me up to Varsity. I knew this was an accomplishment, but one that came with a price. Being the new kid and a freshman meant I had big shoes to fill and a thick skin to grow. Lake Travis made the playoffs that year for the first time in their 6A history.
Perhaps the most challenging thing I have experienced, is the death of my biological father. I was only three years old when he was killed, serving as an Army Ranger in Iraq. While I don’t remember that time in my life, I know the impact it had on my family and how it molded us into the strong individuals we are today.
My father’s sacrifice earned me the gift of education. I am a recipient of the Sgt. John Fry Scholarship for Children of Fallen Soldiers. This scholarship will help pay for my tuition for any public college I choose. I want to make it count, while doing the thing I love most, playing softball.
Thank you for reading my story.
