At the age of 11, I started on an uncertain path that would quickly lead to a driven passion. Every softball player will tell you that playing softball is what they want to do for the rest of their lives. They’ll say that not being able to play will devastate them. I, however, am not every softball player. Yes, I love the game and there is no greater satisfaction than driving home after a 12 hour day on the diamonds, with fresh wounds, my hair matted to my head, aching joints, my new tournament shirt and the knowledge that I’ll be back tomorrow for round two. I want to play as long as that exhilaration is what consumes me. In order for that to happen, I have to continuously challenge myself and always keep my goals insurmountable.
That is what I have done since day one. Starting late in the game, my first coach said that I would never be a pitcher. He said I was too small, not strong enough and started too late. I gave 100% at left field and played like it’s where I always wanted to be. But, I spent every day, for months, in my back yard pitching a ball into a net, not knowing what I was actually doing, but doing it any way. The next season, my team needed a pitcher. I volunteered and led my team to the championship, beating my first coach’s team. That was the goal, but before I reached it, I set my next one of making a travel team as a starting pitcher. I met that goal, but had already set my sights on being the youngest player on an 18u Gold team. I made the team and sat the bench, but I worked hard and within a few months became the cleanup pitcher. In the 7th grade, my focus was making Varsity as a freshman, goal achieved; now I had to be a starter and I would work every position I played to ensure that happened. Goal met and I icing on the cake, I was now a 2B, SS and OF player as well. Now my goal is to play the sport that still runs through my veins and help lead my team to a state championship; while pursuing my goal of playing for an amazing college. I’ve come to appreciate every position on the field and will give nothing short of everything I have in any one of those positions. The same holds true in every aspect of my life. Tell me I can’t and I’ll prove you wrong, tell me I can and I’ll exceed your expectations.
