Simply put, I am a softball nerd. I begged my parents to let me play when I was in kindergarten, first grade and second grade. My parents finally agreed when I was in 3rd grade.
Playing softball quickly became one of my favorite things. I was watching lots of baseball and asking questions, going to clinics and still hitting in the backyard.I worked really hard and quickly became a starter and joined my first travel team. From those early days, I never looked back. I still love to practice - and have been helping to coach the younger girls in my town for years.
My Mom coaches a travel team of younger girls and I love to help out and coach the girls. I feel like that is the least that I can do in order to pay it forward a bit.
Softball and my softball friends have been some of the most important aspects of my life.
I have had some personal struggles over the years. However, softball has been a constant and my parents and I firmly believe that softball has, in fact, helped to keep me alive. No matter what else was going on in my life, I have always been able to find a deep focus and joy on the softball diamond.
I prefer winning - and am very competitive but I love the intellectual challenge of the game. I love the pace of the game and the feeling of working with a team of girls who are, like me, softball nerds. No matter what brought any girl to the team, we are all even in many ways. It doesn't matter that I might be struggling with depression or anxiety when I can put on my cleats and focus on the game. I love that I have a tribe no matter what I am doing - I know that if I am a part of a team, I am not alone. I have had some great coaches and love to work hard and learn every time I am on the field.
I am willing to step into the next phase of my life - especially if I have a team to rely upon and to contribute to. I can't imagine how I could succeed in college without softball.
