When playing for my local recreation basketball league when I was 9, I was moved up a couple grades to play with older kids and still managed at least 20 points a game, but did not make their “All-Star Team” which upset me deeply. My dad asked me if I was truly serious about the sport, and I decided that, yes, this was my sport. However, all aspects of basketball gave me challenges in the upcoming years. Just a couple games after I was named captain/leader of my team, I played 4 travel ball games back to back and pulled my hamstring, but it showed me how important recovery was over excessively pushing through all the time. Before the championship game of an out-of-town San Diego tournament, I acquired a grade 2 sprain in my ankle while out having fun with my teammates, and endured the game while contributing a full stat line with vital 3’s & assists at the end to put us up for the win; it taught me how important accountability and focus was. Between 8th grade & freshman year, I took a mental break from basketball for months and went from making 3’s from halfcourt or the volleyball line consistently & reading well on defense & offence to resetting my entire shot mechanics & playing pick up ball to read on offense and defense again, since people are much different than cones. Each obstacle I continue to face, I take in stride to use it for bettering myself & teammates.
My goal for high school is to keep up with my exceptional academic and basketball performance for the remainder of my high school career. I plan on utilizing basketball’s teachings in my future endeavors and commitments. For college, it is to uplift myself on the court and in the classroom with a powerful school and team. I believe there is always something to do on the court, so if I’m not contributing rebounds or tips, I’m diving on the floor, sprinting to help on defense, or moving to create gaps on offense.
