My name is Sophie Hedge. I began playing basketball for my town when I was 5 and love the sport! I began playing AAU basketball for the CT Cobras when I was in 4th grade and am a point guard / shooting guard. My coach, whom I have had up until the end of 8th grade is the head coach and athletic director for Mercy High school, a private school in CT. I am currently a freshman at Mercy High school and my AAU coach will now be my High School coach. I informed him when I was in 4th grade that I would be playing for him in High School. Coach Kohs gave me a Mercy t-shirt and told me not to wear any other. I was laser focused. Mercy High School has an excellent reputation in the state, having won State class LL championships and league championships. I have worked off season through private lessons, training with coaches and shooting in my driveway any chance I have had free time. I was invited to play with Mercy in the summer league games with the returning Mercy players. Slipping the Mercy uniform over my head...felt great! My feet are now in the doors of Mercy, a place I have always dreamed of playing. My focus has not wavered, it has gotten bigger! I know that I am young, but I also know that it takes hard work to achieve goals you have set. I love everything about this sport. I love the things you can work on as an individual and also how you work together as a team. I have made great friendships through this sport. I have big dreams for after high school. I want to play college basketball. In 4th grade when I told my coach I would go to Mercy, I also said I wanted to be an attorney or be a big business person. No one knows what the future holds, but I do know that I worked hard and set goals for myself. I traded that t-shirt in for a uniform but will keep that t-shirt forever. It is a reminder that I had a goal and a dream and made it happen. The rest is at my fingertips. I am laser focused on my future!
