Emily Canas '23 Recruiting Profile

About me: My name is Emily Canas and I am currently a freshman attending Somerset Academy Charter High. I recently moved to South Miami coming all the way from Boston, Massachusetts. I have been playing basketball since the 4th grade. I heard that the basketball program at Somerset is pretty new, and I would love to help my team grow and grow along with them.

 I like to stand out. Not only by hogging the ball and trying to show off what I can do on my own, but I want my whole team to stand out. I like to create shots for my teammates and have a good way of communication. I try to be at least selfish as possible, but I will take any good shot opportunity that I find. I take constructive criticism from my coaches/ teammates and use it to my advantage. 

Academics: I had about a 3.8 gpa for the first quarter. I currently do not take any honors or advanced placement classes, even though I very much would like to. I put as much effort as possible into my work.

On the court: I have very solid layups and shots from the paint. I also am happy with my speed/ ball handling but would still love to improve.  I think that I need some more work on shooting mid distance/ 3 point shooting under pressure, though. I used to play at the center / pf / sf position considering that I played for a middle school team with players ranging from about 4'9-5'4. I have been informed by my coach that this season I will be playing mainly pg / sg.

College: I currently do not have a specific college that I want to attend in mind, but I am open to finding one. I am interested in a college with good athletics as well as good academics.
