Walking up to retrieve my 2015 MBC Girls All-Tournament award at the 8th grade banquet gave me even more determination than I already had. I started playing recreational basketball in 2011 after trying soccer and fast-pitch softball. At first I was scared to mess up and didn't play to my potential. Through the encouragement of my parents, grandparents and coaches I kept working to improve and realized I finally found my ideal sport.
As I started playing on the 6th grade team my coaches influenced me by pushing me to always be better than I actually was. They pushed me to become a team player and not let anything get to my head that would mess me up. I have learned that when you make a mistake don't get mad, make it right the next time. I also learned to not let fear control you, don't go onto the court automatically thinking you are going to fail.
I have had many obstacles while playing I had to get around. I had to learn how to play with my rapid growth. Going into 6th grade I played point, all the way to center. That was a challenge. Now I am 6 feet tall playing power forward and center for the high school JV and Varsity team. Other obstacles I overcame were the fear of the ball and shooting under pressure, like at the free throw line. Through the encouragement of my coaches and family and lots of practice I have improved my skills and confidence.
In school I most enjoy math so I want to become a math teacher. Math was not a subject I enjoyed or understood early on so I kept working on it until I developed my confidence and felt good going it. I want to go into teaching so that I can help students enjoy math like I do. I also want to coach basketball to encourage other girls.
