Personal Statement

Hi my name is Maria Matrango and I am  a Senior at Pope John Paul II High School in Hyannis MA. I live on Cape Cod in Yarmouth and I am one of two children. I have a younger brother that is a Sophomore in High School. I love to hang out and spend time with my friends and family. In the summer one of my favorite things to do is go to the beach . I am an "A" student and I hate more than anything to be late. I work hard and always try to do my best in anything I do. In the classroom, the field or the court, I am fully committed.

I play two varsity sports, soccer and basketball. As a  Sophomore, Junior and Senior I was named Captain of my schools Varsity soccer team. At the end of my Freshman soccer season I was awarded the honor of "Defensive Player of the Year", and at the end of my Sophomore season the "Most  Outstanding Player". As for basketball, it is a game that I love and work very hard at. I spend three fourths of the year playing and trying to improve my game. In high school I play a 5 and 4.  In AAU I play a 4/3 and sometimes a 5 when needed. I have a good mid-range jumper and I'm working on improving my skill set in the 3 and extending my shooting range. I play physical in the 5/4 and am not afraid of contact.

I would love to play basketball and or soccer at a college that offers a Pre Med or Medical program. In the future I hope to become a Pediatric Oncologist.   Playing competitively is what I am striving for in my college years. If I had my choice I would love to play with a team that is fully committed. A team full of players that want to be there and will not give up at the sight of a challenge or when we fall behind in a game. A team that is more than a team, but a sisterhood who were brought together by the love of a game and will always have each others back at the sign of weakness.
