My Name is Beyonce' Knight. I am a Senior in Class of 2021 and I attend Camden County Technical Schools in Sicklerville, New Jersey. I first started playing basketball at my middle school in 7th grade and I've played it ever since. Starting in 7th grade was an experience I was ready for but then again I wasn't. I really didn't know the background of the game, I really only knew the concept that my coach told me. He said "Beyonce' when you get the ball I want you to run and dribble to our side of the court and try to score, and when your done run back for defense, try to steal the ball or stop the other team from scoring and do it all over again. I want you to do that the entire game, every time you get that ball do those 4 things. If your on the bench cheer for your teammates not matter what, even if they mess up cheer for them because they have another chance once they get the ball back. But when your on the court I want you to give 200% because you have 4 other people on the court with you and you have to work together and collectively as a team to score some points and win the game." And from that day forward that was my mentality always giving 200% because working together as a team is the only way a game of basketball can be played. I never wanted to be the one that was better than the whole team and that why we win the games. I want it to be equal, everyone on the team has their own spot and talents, that why their on the team so they can show their talents and help their team win. Rather than having one person do everything they could but still couldn't get the win, at that point there's no point of playing if other people aren't willing to help and put effort in to winning the game together, celebrating together, and have highlights for everyone that participated and did everything they could whether they one or not they tried.
Through my years of school, i've learned just about everything that I need to know about basketball and I've become a better player, teammate and captain. Starting out was rough, especially for me to watch now because I've came a long way in my skills. Playing basketball in 7th grade I looked like a sling shot. Every time it came I had to do a layup, for some reason I always just threw the ball at the backboard an watch it bounce right back, so then I had to run back to get it back. Every time it didn't go in I was getting frustrated because I kept trying and trying but I just didn't go in. As the game went on I got more and more frustrated to the point that I look like I'm just beaming it at the backboard now like it's the backboards fault that the ball isn't going in. Then when we was in time out a ref pulled me over and actually taught me how to do a layup and when the time out was up and the game stated back I was on fire. By the end of the game I had 8 or 10 points. I was so excited, my mom and dad was excited, I couldn't stop smiling and we went to get ice cream!! I first started out shooting with my right hand which was weird because I'm a lefty. My dad then taught me how to shoot with my left because it's very rare to see left handed shooters. Every night after practice or after school if I didn't have practice, I would practice shooting with my left hand. Now I am at a point that I can't shoot with my right at all I would try just for fun but it doesn't really work out properly!! I've accomplished a lot over the years from when I first started. I've been on varsity for 2 years straight, I've been awarded most valuable player(MVP) twice, and I've been a captain twice. I know that's only 3 things but, when I think about when I first started and how I played, that's a lot.
My mom and dad was always there to support me whether its basketball, soccer, cheerleading, track, or even my academics. I am in honors classes but that never happened before. Especially for math. I was terrible i used to get D's and F's. And for me that was just very discouraging so I just stopped trying. Then one year came and I had this energy for math and I was going to succeed this year. I told my self just open up your head and listen and see what happens. Before all I would I would do is say that doesn't make sense and I would quit. That fast. I opened up, asked questions, as my friends, next thing I know the 1st marking period is over and I got my first A in math. A 96 I could't believe it and from that point I realized that if I just opened up, listen, don't be shy or scared to ask questions, and just try I would be good for ever. Now to this day math is my favorite subject and that why I want to major in Sports and Entertainment Management/Marketing. One for my love of sports and two the business side/the behind the scenes part of any major sports team.
