Sports have always played a major role in my life. It is hard for me to imagine my life without sports playing some role in it. Watching and participating in sports have helped me develop my identity. Being an athlete has helped me grow and develop into the person I am today. Through sports I have developed a lot of positive characteristics that have made me a better member of society.
Being a member of multiple basketball teams taught me to have dedication. It taught me to be selfless putting my teams need before mine. Basketball has taught me to hold myself to high levels of discipline in all aspects of my life. Sports made me a scholar athlete teaching me time management to maintain high academic standards. Being a team captain my freshman year, taught me how to be an effective and caring leader. Playing basketball has also given me multiple opportunities to give back to my community. I enjoy being a coach and mentor to next generation of kids learning to play basketball. Opportunities like this have taught me that giving back is very fulfilling.
Playing golf has allowed me to learn a whole different set of positive characteristics. I have learned to be more focused. By being more focused I can get things done and to not procrastinate as much. I have also learned to be more honest because there is nobody there to constantly keep your scores in check. When playing golf, you cannot be stressed and uptight, so I have had to learn to let go of the stresses of life. I also had to learn to not let bad shots and situations get to me and cause me to create another bad shot or situation. I have learned to have patience while playing golf because it takes longer to shave off strokes from my score.
Through the opportunities I have had in sports, I have learned many positive characteristics. These characteristics; like dedication, discipline, time management, leadership, generosity, selflessness, focus, honesty, relaxation, and patience; have helped me to become a better member of society. In continuing in athletics, I am able to improve on the characteristics I already have and to gain new characteristics that will help me in my future endeavors.
