I have been playing basketball since I was in the third grade. The very moment that my dad put that firm Spalding basketball in my hands, I knew that I wanted to play this great game for the rest of my life. Even at that young age, I promised him that I would play basketball at the collegiate level, and I have every intention of fulfilling that vow.
Life is so uncertain and can throw us unexpected and unwelcomed "air balls". A series of unfortunate events that occurred last year almost made me break that promise. During my first year on Sterling High School’s varsity team as a sophomore in the starting line-up, I collapsed. Subsequent visits to the hospital led to a devastating diagnosis: myocarditis. Myocarditis is a cardiovascular disease marked by inflammation and damage of the heart muscle. In layman’s terms, it meant being sidelined for the remainder of the season. Initially, I struggled with the illness; being physically unable to play basketball filled me with an overwhelming sense of emptiness. Even as my junior year approached, I still found it difficult to come to terms with the fact that I had missed my entire sophomore season. But what was done was done, and I steeled myself to move forward. Determined to not let my condition cripple me or keep me from the game, with enthusiasm and hard work, I did everything in my power to synchronize my body and mind back into playing shape. I worked tirelessly to ensure that I was well enough to be on the court again, all the while holding tightly to my dream of playing basketball.
Having played the sport for so many years, I have developed a considerably high basketball IQ as well as a resilient work ethic. I am very coachable and competitive, always striving for new ways to improve myself as an athlete. I rise to the level of competition and am able to accept and even thrive in the face of adversity. My personal trials and triumphs have taught me to be adaptable no matter the situation. On and off the court, I am a leader amongst my peers. I believe that I am compassionate, encouraging, and decisive—traits necessary to serve as both a dynamic influencer and team player.
I want to attend a college or university that allows me to push myself on the basketball court as well as in the classroom. Playing at the collegiate level is a once in a lifetime, prestigious privilege that has the potential to change my whole life. Knowing this, I am open to all options and desire to match with a program that will expose me to the highest level of competition possible. I will endeavor to put my God-given talents to work in a way that will result in me being one of the hardest-working recruits, players, and students you'll find.
