My name is Valeria Tapia and I love playing basketball. I found the sport when I was 8 and I have not stopped since. I grew up on the Mexican side of the border with Texas where I have been blessed to be a member of the state of Tamaulipas basketball team, where we have played in 2 national championships in the past 4 years and where we have won 1st place in 2013.
I now attend St. Joseph’s Academy in Brownsville, Texas where we compete at the 5A level of TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools). As a freshmen starter, we won 1st place in our district and I was selected not only 1st team all district but 1st team All-State. I was also named to the All-State Tournament team as a starter. As a sophomore, I was named team captain, and repeated as 1st team All District and 2nd All State. I have twice been named to the All Area team locally.
I believe my game has translated well from Mexico basketball to Texas basketball but most importantly, my Academic ability has translated as well. When I completed 6th grade in Mexico I did not speak a word of English. Now in 4 short years of education in Texas, I am completely fluent in English and am very proud of my grades despite English being my 2nd language. I know I want to be an account and know that an education is vital to my life after basketball.

- Was the starting point guard for the team representing the State of Tamaulipas (border with Texas). Placed Second in the National Finals by being beat by Mexico City in a 1 point game. Finals were played in May 2015 in the city of Monterrey, Mexico.

- Was the starting point guard for the team representing the State of Tamaulipas (border with Texas). Won the National Finals by beating the State of Guanajuato. Finals were played in May 2013 in the city of Tijuana, Mexico
