Basketball has defined me for the majority of my life. I started playing basketball at five years of age and although it wasn’t the only sport I played, it was my favorite. I excelled at other activities such as dance and band, but these only served to better my basketball game. I participated in these through middle school and my freshman year. After which, I had to begin to focus more intently on academics and my favorite sport, basketball, if my goals were to be reached. It was a very difficult decision, but (little did I know, this would prepare me for more difficult events to come in my life.) wouldn’t be the only difficulty I would be faced with.
I was a freshman during Hurricane Harvey, and my family was hit hard by this storm, left homeless and displaced. We were out of our home and living apart from each other for months, and although I was safe and happy in a friend’s home, my routine was definitely changed. I realized if I wanted to reach my goals that I had set many years prior, I would have to push through the emotions and changes of the situation and make my dreams come true. I believe difficult times are defining times and I was going to prevail. I put my head down and ran cross-country to train for the basketball season and pushed myself even harder once the basketball season started. At this point, I was also still in band, which meant marching season practice. Our band went to State in marching competition. I was so busy I didn’t have time to think about having lost everything in the floods brought by Harvey. My family rebuilt our home and we carried on, because that’s what you do. I was able to play AAU basketball for the next two years, and was developing into a decent ball player. This year, I was able to procure a spot on a high academic team with the prestigious AAU club, SA Finest. Unfortunately, COVID-19 derailed my plans to play AAU ball most of this season, but not unaccustomed to challenges and change, I have used my past experiences to again, pick up the pieces and make this difficult situation into something great. I anxiously await the start of my senior season.
I am currently training hard in personal training sessions and working to build myself into a player worthy of playing ball at a collegiate level. My past has provided me with many great opportunities to learn and grow. I have learned to be a team player, to communicate with my coaches and teammates, and am loyal to them all. Honesty and dedication are inherent personal traits that I hold dear and feel contribute to my success both on and off the court.
Personal traits acquired over my time as a student athlete allow me to adapt well in adverse situations, and also contribute to my ability to keep reaching for previously set goals. My hard work and dedication shows in my academic achievements as well, paving the way for me to be able to contribute to a collegiate level team, and in turn acquire a college education that will help advance me to my ultimate goal, obtaining a college degree.
