Hi, I am Maya Goldwire, class of 2026. I began playing basketball in first grade through the local Boys and Girls Club league. I immediately became obsessed with basketball. Having the ability to push the ball up and down the court, rebound and get steals propelled me into the sport. In middle school my coach (had me play inside) forward. This has given me the unique ability to rebound and guard post players and bigger players. My favorite aspects of basketball are rebounding and defense, because having good defense and getting extra rebounds gives your team more possessions. Basketball has allowed me to grow as a leader. Leadership qualities I have are working hard even if no one is there and being a positive example for my teammates by showing them the importance of being a good teammate. As an athlete, I am notably adaptable and receptive to coaching. I pick up on instruction rapidly both physically and mentally on the court. My coaches have consistently mentioned over the years how easy I am to coach. Sophomore year I faced adversity as I did not play as much as I would have liked, even though I was the best on the team and I experienced health issues. This lit a fire coming into my junior year. I continued to work and re-built my confidence. Ultimately, I regained my love for the game.
Outside of basketball I compete competitively in track and field. For the past three years, I have qualified to compete in USATF Junior Olympic Nationals. Events I compete in are the Heptathlon, 400mh, and the 4x400m. Academically, I am just as committed to obtaining excellent grades. I am a member of the National Honors Society and I am constantly seeking a new challenge. Sophomore year I took AP Biology and scored well on the exam gaining myself college credit. This year, I am taking AP Computer Science. This class has definitely been a challenge as it is something completely new to me. It has taught me, not only to not give up, but also to ask for help from tutors, teachers, and my support system. As I plan for the future, I know these challenging courses will support my success at the next level.
I know I would make a great addition to a college team because I work hard on and off the court. I am passionate and in the gym every day getting two workouts in. I pride myself on leading a healthy lifestyle through diet, mobility work, yoga, and strength training. I am always working on my game. Personally, I love to read, play games, take photos, travel, go to yoga with my mom and sister, play sports, and spend time outdoors.
My sports goals are to compete and excel at the next level while supporting my academics. Ultimately, I would like to get my masters in communications or environmental studies.
