As I shut my eyes, I can envision every tuck, pike, twist, somersault, and ripped entry that I aspire to do on the diving board. As I continue to visualize my goals, I can also see the name on my college swim suit worn with pride. My name is Miranda Simon, and I am currently a Junior at Fox Chapel Area High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I have begun to seriously consider my options for the future, and I can certainly see myself diving in college.
Diving since the young age of 10 years old, I have always had a deep passion for the sport. I am a member of the competitive Pitt Aquatic Club dive team coached by Julian and Doe Krug at the University of Pittsburgh pool, as well as, a team leader on the Fox Chapel Area High School Diving team. Being coached by some of the best coaches in the nation, they have truly shaped me to become the diver I am today.
I have had a vast amount of achievements in my diving career. This past high school season, I dove for Fox Chapel Area High School. As the team Captain during both my sophomore and junior years, I have become a crucial asset to the team, coming in first in every single dual meet and ending the season with a high score of 236.45. During my last meet of the season, I came within 0.65 points of my high school team’s record, which I plan on breaking next season. I averaged approximately 227 points this season in each 6 dive meet. During my Freshman year, I qualified for the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) regional championships, and was the only Freshman to finish in the top 10. During my Sophomore year, I placed fourth at WPIAL regional championships, and qualified and competed at the Pennsylvania, PIAA, State Diving Championships. This year, as a junior, I placed second overall at the WPIAL championships meet, qualifying for States once again. I finished this WPIAL meet with an 11 dive score of 414.10. At the State Championships, I advanced to finals and wound up in 13th place. Additionally, I am a three year letter winner, and have received “Most Valuable Athlete” award all three years of high school. Because I also dive AAU and USA Diving, I have both a complete 1 and 3 meter list. I hope that my success can one day continue as I support my college.
I have not only been able to achieve success in the pool, but I have also been extremely successful academically. My effort on the board is matched by my effort to out work everyone in the classroom to ensure my own success. I ended my first semester of junior year with a 4.30 weighted GPA, and a 3.96 unweighted GPA. I have never received anything below an A in my scholarly career, nor do I plan on receiving anything lower. I challenge myself with AP and honors courses, while also managing diving for two and a half hours, six days a week, along with other extracurriculars. Being a member of the National Honors Society, I have taken on many roles that define me as a leader. I regularly tutor elementary students in Math and English. I am additionally a member of the B’nai Brith Youth Organization, where I have taken on leadership roles such as being Vice President and Secretary of my local chapter. Additionally, I am a member of the Fox Chapel Book Club, and, of course, the Fox Chapel Swimming and Diving Team.
My coaches have always told me what an optimistic attitude I have. Never do I fail to have a smile on my face, nor do I refuse an opportunity to learn a new dive. I hope that one day I can walk onto the boards of your college with a bright smile on my face, proud to represent my school as a student and an athlete. Thank you so much for considering my application, and I look forward to meeting and talking with you in the future.
Sincerely,
Miranda Simon
