Personal Statement

My name is Makena Tsuye and I am a senior at John F. Kennedy High School in Sacramento, California. I initially began playing golf when I was 6 years old and I played because my father wanted me to play.  I stopped playing when I was 8 years old because, at the time, golf was my father’s passion and not mine. Once I entered high school, I decided to give golf another try.  Golf is now my passion! I would like to play and compete at the college level. I have learned a lot about myself through the sport and I feel golf has helped mold me in becoming a more rounded student, athlete, teammate, and individual. I feel playing golf at the college level will just continue to make me a stronger person in all aspects of my life. The qualities I try to portray for my teammates and coaches are good sportsmanship, leadership (team captain), and playing consistently to help my team.

I have not yet decided on the desired major, but the medical field or psychology are a couple of my options right now.
My desired goals for college golf are to be able to qualify and play on the team. I want to qualify to participate in tournaments around the country. Traveling and playing are high expectations for me, but my academics are just as important. During my freshman and sophomore years of high school, I maintained a 4.166+ for my GPA. I just completed my junior year and maintained a 4.3 GPA.  I struggled in Biology but with tutoring and guidance from my instructor finished strong. I continued to do my best to balance academics, which consist of AP and honor classes, varsity golf, and community service work. I was able to manage everything as I continue to prioritize everything.

At 6 years old, it was clear that golf was my father’s decision. Now I want to play golf and it is my personal decision to be a better golfer. My parents have always supported me and allowed me to experiment with new sports and ideas. I am learning from them how to navigate my journey in life.
