My golf career, unlike others, did not begin at the age of four. When I was four years old my parents enrolled me in dance classes. I was the girl that you would see tapping dancing down aisles in the grocery store. Up until the age of eight I had no other interest in any other sports. My dad golfed in high school and college, ultimately trying to go pro. Naturally, like all dads he wanted his kid to take after him, so he found a summer golf camp at Journey Golf Course and got me in it. From that point on every coach or instructor, I saw told me I had a “great swing.” I took that to heart and began wanting to invest more time in golf.
In 2015 I played in my first golf tournament which was run by my swing coach, Lou Skovron. Every time I step out onto the course, I become tougher mentally and set my goals a little bit higher. I have had to work harder to not blame myself for team losses and realize that everyone holds the same amount of responsibility. On all the teams that I have been on, whether it's for golf or a class project, I naturally take the lead. I have been a part of ASB/Student Government for five straight years. My passion for leadership and watching others succeed is something that drives me each day. I have an intense spirit for my school and bring it with me wherever I go. I think my team builds off my spirit and takes it straight into our matches or tournaments.
One of my top strengths is being a maximizer, meaning I find things and want to make them better. Golf allows me to better myself in a sport and being a member of National Charity League lets me do this in my community. My mom and I get to volunteer in our community for philanthropies that have amazing missions. One of my favorites is Our Nicholas Foundation. This organization was created by a family with a special needs son, who just wanted their boy to experience things like sports as any other kid should. ONF allows kids with special needs to play sports such as soccer and baseball with kids just like them. Working with this organization, I was able to work with the kids one-on-one and watch them fall in love with a sport, just like I fell in love with golf. I have filled my time doing things I love, but this hasn’t been without sacrifice. Many times I have had to cancel plans with friends to play in a tournament or volunteer or go to the gym. It certainly has been hard since I often feel that I am left out or am distancing myself from them. However, through golf I have found friends who have the same goals as me and understand that I am working towards my goals every day.
My main support group, however, is my family. My grandparents, parents, and brother have been behind me from day one. They have dealt with the yelling, the crying, and the smiles all while keeping me focused on the bright side of things. I never tell them how much their support means to me, but I honestly would not be playing if it wasn’t for them constantly reassuring me that I am worthy of competing with other girls who I think are better than me. The day I shot my best round of 74, happened to be a day my little brother and I both had tournaments. I came in from playing that round and found myself looking for my family to celebrate with me. My little brother plays on a travel baseball team so there are many times when my parents either split up to be at both our events or one of us is on our own for the day. That was one of the days my dad was working, and my mom had to take my brother to baseball. I never saw it as a big deal to have them there up until that day. That made me understand how much their presence and cheesy pictures mean to me. Not only am I able to balance my time between golf, school, and extracurriculars, but I try to make time for my family because they deserve all the credit. In college I hope that I can be a part of a team whose values are ones that I can relate to. I hope that I can share my contagious school spirit with the rest of my future team. I hope that I find a school that not only I love, but my family loves too. My name is Jordyn Janert and I would be an amazing part of your school
